Non-Traditional Families and Happiness

In a study published in the Journal of Marriage and Family, children's development and happiness are more closely related to the strength of parenting and family support systems than to whether they live in a traditional or non-traditional family (Biblarz & Stacey, 2010). Furthermore, non-traditional families demonstrate strong adaptability, communication, and resilience. For instance, single parents often build strong support networks, and LGBTQ+ families have been found to raise children with levels of psychological adjustment like those raised in traditional families (American Psychological Association, 2020). These families may even benefit from broader definitions of love, responsibility, and cooperation.

Oftentimes, non-traditional families encounter significant legal and institutional difficulties. Some examples: in some states in the United States LGBTQ+ parents may struggle to gain legal recognition as joint parents, which can affect decisions about custody, schooling, and healthcare. Similarly, adult children in chosen families where individuals form familial bonds not based on blood or marriage may be barred from making medical decisions for ailing loved ones due to a lack of legal standing. All these challenges can add stress to family life and expose the need for broader legal definitions of family that reflect social realities rather than outdated norms.

Recognizing and supporting non-traditional families is essential for promoting equity and well-being in society. Carmichael Family Law Consulting can provide legal assistance to help non-traditional families navigate complex issues, including guardianship, adoption, and custody rights. Legal support is crucial in ensuring that all families, regardless of their structure, have access to the protections and rights afforded to them under the law.
